My Mission:
To inspire and motivate people to achieve success on their own terms, and in a way that most fully expresses their values, passion, and priorities.
I got my wake up call early in my career.
After graduating college and landing a great job in Human Resources at a solid company, I thought I had it made. I mean this was the kind of company where people worked 30 or 40 years and retired with a nice pension.
Within my first 6 months, we hit a multimillion dollar problem. The company announced a layoff of 500 employees. As an HR Administrator, part of my job was to figure out who was getting laid off, prepare the notifications, and set up meetings with several hundred affected workers.
Worse yet, during this time, I got my own pink slip. Fortunately for me, I was given an extension to help process all of the laid off workers. I met face to face with more than 200 workers and that’s when it hit me.
These people weren’t ready for this.
They had never taken control of their careers. They had come to expect that this company, this great employer, would take care of them. They had put their careers on autopilot. Many of them had been there 10, even 20 years and had not given their ‘next move’ another thought. In their mind, there WAS no next move.
Fortunately, I ended up being promoted and transferred after the layoff was over. I had established my resiliency and my reputation as a key player during that time. But I also knew I was going to stay in the drivers seat of my career. I would NEVER turn the reins over to my company. And from that day forward, I have managed my career like a portfolio. I have continued to focus on adding new skills, experiences, and challenges to my work. And this has kept me in control and with multiple options for my career.
Later, when I decided to launch a business so I could do work I loved while raising my two kids, I thought of this. I realized I wanted to help other people also remain in charge of their careers. I decided to become a career coach to help people take charge of their careers and their lives.
